UFC 161 headed to Winnipeg

UFC Winnipeg

The UFC will host an event in Winnipeg, Canada on June 15. The fight card will include Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Antonio Rogério Nogueira, Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson AND Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley.

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has confirmed his intention to return to action at UFC 161, revealing he will undergo surgery on Thursday to correct a shoulder injury.

Johnson has a partially torn labrum, which started to affect his training following his win over John Dodson. His full recovery is expected in a minimum of eight weeks.

Mighty Mouse had been scheduled to fight John Moraga in the next defence of his belt at the TUF 17 Finale on April 13. However, he is now targeting UFC 161.

"My shoulder was still bugging me after the Dodson fight," Johnson said on The MMA Hour. "I started training and I was starting to work out and pull a rope, which is one of our conditioning exercises, and I couldn't pull on the rope.

"You don't want to think there's anything wrong with your body. You want to think you're invincible. I got the MRI, and they were like, 'You have a partially torn labrum,' and I was like, 'Aw, dammit.' And that's how we got the bad news.

The UFC will be holding an event on June 15 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on June 15 and will feature Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans.
A couple of news items came out today that give us a clearer picture of the UFC's plans for early Summer. First Tatame.com reported that the UFC has secured verbal agreements from Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans to face each other on June 15.

Secondly, Joe Ferrarao, host of SportsNet's UFC Central program tweeted the following:

It seems a safe bet this will be UFC 161 following UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva II on May 25 in Las Vegas. Jake Shields vs. Tyron Woodley is also rumored for this card. Both men are coming off decision losses in lackluster fights. Henderson (29-9, 6-3 UFC) is coming off a loss at UFC 157 to Lyoto Machida. Evans (17-3-1, 12-3-1 UFC) lost to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 156.
