There are rumors going around the web that Demian Maia vs. Rory MacDonald is in the works. There isn't any reliable source that I can give right now, but let's hope this fight happens. If Maia can win a devastation fashion, he might be next in line for a shot at the UFC Welterweight Title (after Hendricks). The bout would take place June 15, 2013 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
In the last 8 months Maia racked up 3 straight wins in the octagon. In his welterweight debut he faced Dong Hyun Kim in a bout on at UFC 148. The bout was stopped in 47 seconds by referee Mario Yamasaki, after Maia took Kim down and finished him with strikes form the mounted position. After that Maia fought Rick Story at UFC 153. He went on to win that fight by first round submission due to a neck crank. Maia next faced Jon Fitch at UFC 156. He out-Fitched Fitch for all three rounds, winning by unanimous decision victory. With the win, Maia is 3-0 since his welterweight debut.
MacDonald, is currently on a 4 fight win streak and could possibly earn his 5th straight win when he faces Maia. After his loss against Carlos Condit, MacDonald was expected to face James Wilks at UFC 129. However, Wilks was replaced on the card by Nate Diaz. MacDonald dominated Diaz during all three rounds, earning a unanimous decision victory. He then faced Mike Pyle at UFC 133, winning the bout by TKO in the first round via ground and pound. After that fight he went on to face Che Mills and BJ Penn, both which he defeated and making him 4-0 in his last fights.
Let's hope something official will be announced soon!
