Fights to make after UFC on FUEL TV 9

UFC on FUEL TV 9 Mousasi vs. Latifi took place Saturday April 6, 2013 in Stockholm, Sweden. Let's see what fights the UFC should make next for the winners/losers

Gegard Mousasi:
Honestly, I don't know what fight to make. Mousasi said he has a knee injury so this will be hard to predict. The fight that was originally scheduled against Gustafsson will most likely not happen, as Gustafsson will be ready to fight earlier than Mousasi. And Gustafsson is hunting for the title so he wants to fight as soon as possible. Mousasi will be sidelined for quite some time, but when he gets back he'll probably get the Mauricio Rua vs. Rogério Nogueira winner or maybe Dan Henderson vs. Rashad Evans winner.

Ilir Latifi:
Dana White said he was going to get another fight, so no worries for him just yet. I expect him to come out against a mid-tier fighter in the Light Heavyweight division that matches up well with him.

Ross Pearson:
I'd love to see Ross Pearson fight Joe Lauzon next, he's not afraid to go toe to toe and he's great on the ground too. It will be a good test for Pearson. If they want to feed him another striker, give him Jamie Varner.

Ryan Couture:
I read on most websites he will most likely be cut, but I hope he can stay for one more fight to prove himself. He had a very difficult test in Ross Pearson and even though he failed, I thought he did quite well. So set Couture up against Melvin Guillard or something.

Matt Mitrione
Joe Silva, set him up against Brendan Schaub or Ben Rothwell.

Phil De Fries
Put him out of his misery and cut him already. He's getting KOed every time he losses and it's not good for him.

Brad Pickett
I really liked his performance against Mike Easton and the fight definitely deserved fight of the night. There aren't a lot of guys ranked above him anymore. Maybe give him winner of Urijah Faber vs Scott Jorgensen?

Mike Easton
It's his second loss in a row, but he had a good performance against Pickett so he probably won't be cut. But I have really no idea who to match him up against?

What do you guys think of these match-ups?

UFC on Fuel TV 9 Predictions

Let's take a look on the UFC on Fuel TV 9 predictions by MMA Europe.

Gegard Mousasi vs. Ilir Latifi

While wrestlers aren't exactly good match-up for Mousasi, I think he will overcome early pressure by Latifi. Mousasi's takedown defense has centainly improved since the Jardine fight and he should be able to hold Latifi off. Because of the pressure Latifi has to put on, he will probably gas early as he had to do a very difficult weigh cut on short notice aswell. I won't be surprised by an upset here but I'm still picking Gegard for the win.
Gegard Mousasi by TKO/KO

Ross Pearson vs. Ryan Couture

I really like the way Ross Pearson fight and he certainly is entertaining. Since Pearson is the more experienced fighter of the 2 I also expect him to come out on top. Pearson look a lot better now that he moved up in weight class, he should be able to put pressure on Couture and make this a striking match. It's Couture debut in the UFC and there's a lot of pressure on him. I don't see any way how he gets past Pearson.
Ross Pearson by Unanimous Decision

Matt Mitrione vs. Phil De Fries

I expect Matt Mitrione to finish this fight quite early, De Fries won't be able to handle Mitrione's striking and he will try hard for the takedown, but I don't think he will be able to get it. I see Mitrione landing a big shot and finish off De Fries fast.
Matt Mitrione by TKO/KO

Brad Pickett vs. Mike Easton

I haven't seen much of both fighters but I think Pickett is the better powerfull striker of the two.
Brad Pickett by TKO/KO

Diego Brandao vs. Pablo Garza

This could probably end up as FOTN for sure, I always like Brandao and his style and with Garza in front of him it could be a great fight. Brandao improved a lot of holes in his game and I think he will pick Garza apart on the feet.
Diego Brandao by Unanimous Decision

Ilir Latifi replaces Alexander Gustafsson vs. Gegard Mousasi

ilir latifi picture

Ilir Latifi replaces Alexander Gustafsson to fight against Gegard Mousasi in Saturday's UFC on FUEL TV 9 main event.

I'm sure nobody knows who he is but Ilir Latifi is from Sweden and training partner of Gustafsson. UFC president Dana White tweeted about the new fight just a few minutes ago:

Latifi comes into his UFC debut on a 3 fight win streak. His most recent loss was against Bellator MMA light heavyweight tournament winner Emanuel Newton in 2011. Mousasi's original opponent Alexander Gustafsson was forced out of the bout with a cut, which was confirmed by the Swedish Athletic Commission this morning.

Alexander Gustafsson officially out of UFC on Fuel TV 9 fight

alexander gustafsson picture

Alexander Gustafsson is officially out of his fight with Gegard Mousasi at UFC on Fuel 9 because of a cut suffered in training.

Finally we know something official, even though Dana White said everything could continue as planned, Gustafsson will not be medically cleared for his fight with Gegard Mousasi. Ariel Helwani posted a piece of the statement released by the supervising commission:

The SMMAF Medical Committee has today reviewed the circumstances regarding Gustafsson and his injury. The SMMAF Medical Committee recognizes that a competitor cannot be medically cleared earlier than the day before the match. However, bearing in mind that a correct medical examination that met the regulatory demands has been performed, nothing in the SMMAF regulations hinders the SMMAF Medical Committee from making a decision to stop Gustafsson from competing. As it is clear that Alexander Gustafsson will not be fit to compete as planned and cannot be medically cleared on Friday the 5th of April, the SMMAF Medical Committee has today decided that Alexander Gustafsson will not be allowed to participate in the planned match on April 6th.

No replacement has been found yet, but you should look for updates regularly on MMA Europe. Stay tuned!

Dana White says Gustafsson vs Mousasi is still on

alexander gustafsson picture

Dispite the news that broke out, that Alexander Gustafsson had suffered an injury during training, Dana White says the UFC plan to continue the event as scheduled.

Earlier it was reported that Alexander Gustafsson suffered a cut during training and was unable to be cleared for this friday's medical check-up. While his camp confirmed the injury and three doctors from the SMMAF said that the cut was bad enough to need 3 week's healing time before Gustafsson would be ready to fight, Dana White says the bout will continue:

Let's hope the fight is still on as everybody wants to see this fight.
